Messi: Never before had Messi scored four free-kick goals in one season before Sunday. However, the strike that brought up such a tally had been witnessed many times before. That didn’t dull the moment in any way, though. If Barcelona indeed successfully defend their Liga title, this could go down as the goal that effectively saw them crowned, curling home a free-kick finish from the best part of 25 yards. It’s just not fair.

Visiting sides to the Santiago Bernabeu often attempt to sit deep, absorbing pressure in an effort to see out a goalless draw or a smash ’n grab win. Thos efforts are mostly in vain. Valencia, however, tried to stop the supply lines to Karim Benzema,Gareth Bale and Ronaldo. In theory, it would have worked had Ronaldo not supplied himself. Creating everything for himself. Scoring himself. Essentially winning a must-win match himself.
